South Texas FCA
FCA began in 1954 through the vision God gave a simple coach by the name of Don McClanen: to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. FCA in South Texas was birthed in 1972 through Dennis Conner, a tennis coach for Pan American University. As a new Christian, Coach Conner was looking for an outlet to impact and influence his players and other Pan American athletes for Jesus Christ. In the early 80's, Barney Sarver came on Staff with FCA in South Texas and pioneered the ministry and reached many coaches, athletes, and communities.
Since 1972, the FCA ministry in South Texas has grown from just one Campus to over 100 "Certified" Campuses & Ministries in our Area. FCA currently has thousands of Jr High, High School, and College student athletes & coaches who meet every week to grow through athletic competition, Bible study, prayer, and fellowship. Along with changing lives on the public school campuses, we also have ministriies that specifically focus on Women's Sports, Coaches, Community Sports, International concerns, and helping keep our local kiddos to stay away from drugs through our One Way 2 Play -- Drug Free (OW2P) program.
As ministy has grown, so has the number of folks serving through FCA. We now have a dozen fulltime and part-time staff as well as over 500 volunteers. Texas has grown over the last 40 years, and with approximately 3 million people in the 30 counties that make up our South Texas FCA Area, our staff & volunteers stay busy fulfilling the mission of FCA "to present to coaches and athletes, and all who they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church."
God is using FCA to change lives. Our goal for the upcoming year is to strengthen our Campus ministry to coaches & athletes, take over 1,000 Campers to one of our FCA Camps, and provide over 10,000 FCA Bibles to coaches & athletes in our Area. Only through the generous donations of our community and the hard work of all those involved will we continue to meet the needs of all the incredible coaches & athletes who call South Texas home.
